Silver Horde “Two Face” Spoon wins First Derby of 2017

Winner of the American Legion Salmon Derby on Orcas

San Juan Island resident Rustie Mager, shown above, won the 38th Annual American Legion Salmon Derby on Orcas Island.

Ninety-two fishermen and women joined the derby, which had 39 salmon weighed in over the weekend of Jan 28-29. Participants enjoyed winning door prizes that were donated by local businesses.

Mager’s winning catch was 20 pounds, 11 ounces. She took home a check for $1,100.

Nelson “Spud” Goodsell quoted Mager as saying “it was a brute that whacked the new Silver Horde TWO FACE spoon on extra long 25 lb leader.”

Other winners were: second prize ($500), Richard Sidel, 13 pounds, nine ounces; third prize ($400) Mark Sawyer, 12 pounds, 13 ounces; fourth prize ($250), Eric Hansen, 12 pounds, 12.5 ounces and fifth place ($100), David Clark, 12 pounds, 12 ounces. There were also two blind weigh draws for $150 each that went to David Hall and Ron Nigretto.
